FRIESLAND BARN

FINALISING

Located in Friesland, the Netherlands, this renovation project revitalises an old barn adjacent to a historic villa, blending traditional charm with modern functionality. Designed with simplicity and continuity, the barn’s structure is clad in wood and aluminium, creating a seamless transition from the villa’s traditional brick and wood façade to the barn’s updated exterior. Emphasising the site’s ancient history without resorting to demolition, the design preserves and highlights architectural details such as original window frames and structural elements, some of which remain visible through the new cladding. By directing resources primarily to the interior, the barn has been meticulously transformed into two distinct spaces: a private residence and a cosy B&B, each equipped with modern comforts and crafted with precision. This project exemplifies how thoughtful design can both enhance and modernise a historic space, paying homage to its architectural heritage.
