giro’69
This is Giro'69, the 2nd of June 1969, during the historic Giro d'Italia, dedicated to cycling legend "The Cannibal", Eddy Merckx. By this point, Merckx had worn the Maglia Rosa for six days. He was accused of doping after allegedly taking fencamfamina, a substance that prevents sleep. The test was carried out before the transfer stage between cities, not during an actual race stage. This sparked major controversy and even a diplomatic dispute between Italy and Belgium. Whether Merckx was unknowingly doped or intentionally, his difficult personality made him enemies, possibly influencing the scandal. This painting celebrates his last day in the Maglia Rosa in 1969, commemorating a historic but controversial moment for cycling fans.
